Essay on Raksha Bandhan in 300 words

Raksha Bandhan is a festival of Hindus which is celebrated in India and other parts of the Indian subcontinent where people are influenced by the Hindu culture. Every year, this festival falls on the full moon day in the month of 'Shraavan' according to the Hindu lunar calendar which usually falls in the month of August. On this day sisters of all ages tie a sacred thread called Rakhi around their brother's wrist. That's the reason why it is also known as the 'festival of Rakhi' . This Rakhi is the symbol of sister's love for her brother. It also symbolizes the promise of brothers to their sisters that they are always with them like a shield or protector. The word 'Raksha' means protection and 'Bandhan' means bond, thus "Raksha Bandhan" literally means 'the bond of protection, obligation or care'. In this bond of brothers and sisters, brothers are obliged to take care or protect their sister in every phase of life.

There are so many stories related to the origin of this festival in Hindu mythology. But most popular of them are the story of  king Bali and goddess Lakshmi which is described in Vishnu Purana. King Bali was very powerful and also a true devotee of Lord Vishnu. He managed to defeat everyone in battle due to his enormous power. Feared from his increasing strength, Lord Indra requested Lord Vishnu to do something to stop Bali. So Vishnu took the form of 'Vamana' (a dwarf sage) and went to Bali's kingdom. Bali was very generous, so Vamana requested  to him for three steps of land. Surely a dwarf cannot cover much ground with his three steps so Bali said to Vamana to cover three steps of land. Then lord Vishnu came to his original form and cover whole universe in two steps and put last step on Bali's head. But lord Vishnu was also very generous and cannot see his true devotee suffering like that. So lord Vishnu became Bali's doorman and promised him to protect him from all dangers. Since Vishnu do not returned to Vaikuntha then Goddess Lakshmi came to earth as a Brahmin woman. She met Bali and tied a thread on his wrist and prayed for protection. She requested Bali to return Lord Vishnu so that they can go back to Vaikuntha. Then Bali requested the lord to return back to his place. After that, people all over the world started celebrating Raksha Bandhan which strengthens the bond between brother and sister.
